Col. Hugh L. Baynes   April 20, 1917 - Feb. 3, 2008

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Hugh L. Baynes, 90, of Huntsville passed away Sunday. Col. Baynes was a veteran of World War II, the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He had over 18,000 hours of flight time as a pilot.

He was the pilot who flew Wernher Von Braun and the Redstone Rocket to Cape Canaveral for the first successful launch. He retired as a full colonel from the U.S. Air Force after more than 32 years of active duty.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty Jean Baynes. Survivors include daughter, Beverly Baca and husband Jerry of Madison; son, John Ray Baynes and wife Kathy of Maryland; grandchildren, Denise Burroughs and husband Jeff of Cullman, Christi League and husband Will of Huntsville, Dixie Bailey and husband Bob of Huntsville, Joy Baynes of Washington, D.C, and Jean Baynes of Tucson, Ariz.; and great-grandchildren, Jesse, Libby and Kacy Burroughs, Bentley, Wills and Betty Jean League and Jimmy and Bobby Bailey.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 3 March 03 at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
