KOMANSKI, WALTER M.

Walter passed away on October 19, 2008 at the age of 88. Walter was born and grew up on his beloved Shelter Island in New York.

With advent of WWII he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served as the youngest Master Sergeant in the Air Corps. While in the Aleutian Islands he lived under severe conditions on the islands of Attu and Sitka and participated in the U.S. effort to counter the Japanese invasion of these U.S. Territories.

He married his sweetheart Trudy Murphy and enjoyed 64 years of marriage until she passed away in 2005. He loved golf and was a life-long practicing Roman Catholic.

Walter worked in missile and flight systems as an electrical engineer and educational specialist. He worked for Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and retired from the U.S. Navy as a Civil Servant designing training systems for flight simulators. He was proud to have been on the team that designed and built the Lunar Excursion Module that saved the lives of the astronauts on the Apollo 13 mission.

Walter is survived by his son Walter G. Komanski, his daughter in-law Deborah Komanski, his grandsons Ryan Komanski and Christopher Bligh Komanski and his nieces Barbara Lastra and Margaret Hathaway.

Funeral Service Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 2PM, Woodlawn Memorial Chapel, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, FL 34734.
