Melvin Lee Hastings, Satellite Beach

Melvin Lee Hastings, 88, of Satellite Beach, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at home, surrounded by family. Mel was born October 11, 1921, in Golden City, MO.

He was a longtime resident of Brevard County, moving his family here in 1958. Melvin was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, and later made his living working as a Quality Control Inspector for McDonnell* Douglas at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, retiring in 1984.

After retirement, Mel enjoyed traveling the United States by motor home, visiting most of the lower 48. He was the kindest of men, a devoted husband, and wonderful father. His family and all who knew him have suffered a tremendous loss, but are ever so grateful to have been a part of his life.

Mel was predeceased by his first wife, Goldie Coburn Hastings, and his second wife, Donna Barton Hastings. He is survived by his three children, Linda Hastings of Melbourne, FL, Debra Hastings Hurwitz (Ed) of Palm Bay, FL, and M. Leon Hastings (Patti) of Palm Bay, FL; his six step children, William Barton (Glenda) of Smethport, PA, Bonnie Barton Morgan (Kyle) of Greensboro, NC, Gregory Barton (Alisa) of Kissimmee, FL, Jeffery Barton (Cheryl) of St. Cloud, FL, Vanessa Barton Davidson (Rex) of Kissimmee, FL, and Jill Barton Phelps (Lee) of Satellite Beach, FL; 16 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild.

Calling hours are scheduled for Monday, January 25, 2010 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., followed by a graveside service at 10 a.m. at Florida Memorial Gardens, 5950 U.S. Hwy 1, Rockledge, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the charity of your choice, in honor of Melvin.
