Ad Astra, Pioneer, Ad Astra....

ROBERSON SR., CLAUDE N., "Robbie" 81, of Sanford, FL,

went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Dec. 2, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. He was born Sep. 28, 1928, in Pierce Co. GA, to the late Claudy L. and Malinda Roberson.

Upon high school graduation he joined the Navy, served 20 years, and retired in June 1966. Within a few weeks he went to work for Bendix Corp. at the Kennedy Space Center on the Apollo program for six years. He held a number of jobs after that: home repair, building green houses, working for FEMA as a damage assessment inspector for eight years, hauling boats and helicopters for a few years and finally retiring in 1990. He was never without a job for more than a few weeks and he went at retirement with the same enthusiasm that he put into his employments.

He was always at the ready if anyone needed something built, repaired, a loan or just needed someone to talk to. He truly loved people and delighted in doing things for them. He was a member of The Fleet Reserve, The American Legion and a life member of The DAV. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, York Rite and Bahia Shrine, Sanford Shrine Club, and Smoky Mountain Shrine Club in Franklin, NC. He was an avid motorcyclist for over 60 years.

A memorial service was held at Ellijay Baptist Church on Dec. 12, in the mountains of western NC east of Franklin that he loved so much.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty J. Roberson; two children: Judy A. Jett of Sanford and Claude N.(Dottie) Roberson Jr., "Pete" of Sanford, son-in-law Daniel W. Jett of Lake In The Hills, IL, three grandchildren: Mariah Lynn Jett of Sanford, Michael Patrick Jett of Lowville, NY, and CWO3 Eric J. (Daryn) Jett USMC of Oceanside, CA; three great-grandchildren: Alexis Jett of Port Orange, FL, Giovanni K. Jett of Lowville, NY, Trinity Marie Jett of Oceanside, CA; and a sister, Dorothy Lightsey of Brunswick, GA; he is also survived by two step grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren, and one step great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at Central Baptist Church in Sanford on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
