Anna Jean Skaglin Stegall, 81, of Palatka, died Monday, July 19, 2004 at her residence. She was born September 6, 1922 the only daughter of Ellis V. Skaglin and Gladys Valean Brown pioneer settlers of Jacksonville, Fla. She attended Andrew Jackson High School, graduating in 1939. She Attended Drake University 1939 thru 1940 on a National Honor Society Scholarship. She Served 2-1/2 years as an ambulance, bus and truck driver for the 1247th Hospital Train Unit during World War II. In 1947 she attended Jackson ville University and received a degree as a C. P. A. She worked for the Childrens Home Society of Florida, and was a manager for Barnett Bank N. A. S. Jacksonville. In 1953 she joined the Civil Service as a G-3 and was promoted to G-4. In 1957 she became a teacher at Allentown School in Allentown, Fla. In 1960 she started work on the Minuteman project at Cape Canaveral, for Boeing Missile Division. She moved to Chrysler Missile Division as head of the Engineering Library as a part of the Apollo Program on the Saturn 1 B, aiding in the rebuilding of pad 34 from which the manned launches for pre-moon landings were made and was part of the Skylab team. She transferred to Detroit to Chrysler Motor Division to work on the Sherman tank laser firing systems. She returned to the Cape to work for Planning Research Corporation as a senior logistical analyst, part of the design and building of pad 36 and shuttle ground support. She left the Cape in 1986 when Challenger was lost. Jean and her late husband, Robert E. Stegall are among the many honored as Pioneers of Space at the Space Walk. Their names are etched in bronze commemorating these monu mental achievements in history.
Jean was a member in good standing in the Pearl Harbor Survivors, Chapter 6, Society of Logistical Engineers, Jacksonville Chapter, Space and Range Pioneers, Retired Officers Association, Order of the Eastern Star, #35, Cocoa, FL, past High Priestess of Hadji Court # 88, Ladies Oriental Shrine of N. A., has been honored by the National Sojourners, Inc., Chapter # 435, Jacksonville and is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Palatka. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Deidre V. and Chuck Kelley of Yulee; one grandson, Charles Riley Thompkins of Gaines ville,; one niece, Vicki K. Miller of Cocoa Beach; and one nephew, Donald Carr of San Antonio, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with Pastors Don Philpott and Dennis McOmber officiating ,with Eastern Star rites bestowed by Hadji Court # 88. Interment will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Flowers are gratefully accepted or memorial gifts may be made to the Shriners Childrens Hospital, 12502 North Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612. Masters Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge of arrangements.
