Major Austin J. (Stan) Parker was born March 16, 1920 in Presque Isle, Maine. He was the son of Purlin John and Annie Willet Parker. Stan Died Friday, October 8, 2004 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla. Stan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dr. Phyllis Parker; his daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Greg Blanschan; a sister, Marie Brilliant; and two grand children, Matthew Parker and Abigail Parker. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Allen S. and William R. He attended Boston University, University of Miami, and received a B.S. degree from Oklahoma State in the first class to be called the Oklahoma Cowboys, and he did his graduate work there.
During World War II Stan was a B-24 pilot, sta tioned on Guadalcanal. Later he was reas signed to Hickam Field in Oahu. There he met and married Phyllis. He was recalled to active duty by the army during the Korean War. Upon his return home he served as Commandant of Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He later was transferred to Germany, then Italy. One of the most interesting military assignments was that of transporting the original space monkeys, Abel and Baker to Cape Canaveral for their historic flight. When President Eisenhow er organized the Presidential Helicopter Unit, Stan was an original member. He flew Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson, before retiring in 1966. He mad the historic European trip with President John F. Kennedy. After military retirement, he taught high school history and coached golf in Woodbridge, Virginia. In 1981 Stan retired to Florida and spent his summers in Northern Maine. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the Strunk Funeral Home, Sebas tian, Fla., with Rev. Laurie Hart, niece, officiating. Military honors will follow conducted by the American Legion Post #189, VFW Post #10210, P.L.A.V. Post #210, all of Sebastian, Fla. Memorials may be made to Ones favorite charity.
