BRUNO
CAPUTO COCOA BEACH -- Bruno G. Caputo, retired Grumman Vice President,
died Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Wuestoff Hospital in Rockledge. He was 69
years old. Bruno was born in New York City and graduated Xavier Military
Academy. He studied civil engineering at Manhattan College in Riverdale,
N.Y. He served in the United States Air Force, assigned to Elemendorf AFB,
Anchorage, Alaska. He completed an executive management program at Penn
State University. And in 1985 Bruno was awarded a Doctorate of Aerospace
Sciences from Embry Riddle University. In 1990, he retired from the Grumman
Aerospace Corporation after 32 years of service. At the time of his
retirement, Bruno was Vice President and General Manger of Operations for
the Electronics System Division at Great River, N.Y., responsible for
facilities in N.Y., Salisbury, IvID andBenton Park, Pa. He was
individually responsible for having Grumman join IBM, Dupont and others,
forming business partnerships, promoting the national business interests
of the semi- conductor industry. Bruno served in the US Air Force, in
Anchorage, Alaska, responsible for facility engineering activation
concerned with the DEW line defense system. After his tour of duty, Bruno
was employed by MW Kellogg and Bechtel Companies. He later worked in the
commercial transportation industry for General American Transportation
Company where he designed several patented equipment concepts, currently
in use. In 1959, Bruno joined the Grumman Corporation as a project
engineer, responsible for marine container design, development and
production. He became the assistant program manager for handling and
transportation on theLunar Module Program in 1962 and in 1965 followed the
program to Cape Kennedy, Fla. There he was first appointed staging
activation manager and later in 1966 configuration/planning manager for
all ground tests and space craft operations. Hereturned to New York and
was appointed manager of vehicle technology engineering for the F14
program at Calverton. Later, he was appointed assistant to the President
for program performance for new business requirements. Remaining in that
position until becoming Vice-President of Operations for Grumman's
Electronics Division. Besides holding memberships in several professional
and community organizations, he had been a member of the Board of Trustees
of Dowling College, Oakdale, N.Y., and a member of the executive board of
the Boy Scouts of America and the Air ForceAssociation. His membership and
industry organizations included the ASME and AIAA. He was currently
secretary/treasurer of his condo association and a member of the Moose
Lodge, in MerrittIsland, Fla. Bruno and his wife, Patricia, reside in
Cocoa Beach. He is survived by his son, William Caputo of Salisbury Md.;
daughters, Lorraine Caputoof Ocean View, Del. and Maureen and husband, John
Start of Merritt Island; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and
brother, Jack Caputo resides in California. Visitation will be held
Thursday, January 23rd, at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Cocoa Beach,
from1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our
Saviour's Catholic Church on Friday January 24th, at 10:30 a.m.,
Internment to follow at Florida Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may
