POWELL MELBOURNE -- Dolores W. Powell, 87, of Melbourne, Fla., passed
away Wednesday, September 17, 2003. Dee Dee, as she was known, was born in
Yorkville, Tenn., on July 24, 1916. She moved to Memphis where she
co-owned and operated a ladies foundation manufacturing company. She was
not only the president of Dolores Inc., she was the chief designer. In
1958, she moved to Brevard County and shortly thereafter she went to work
for Pan American World Services, which had the Ground Services Contract at
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station during the early years as Cape Canaveral
became known around the world as the gateway to space. She loved to travel
and did so extensively while working for Pan Am. She continued to travel
after her retirement in July of 1981. Dee Dee has been a resident of this
area for over 40 years and considered herself a Floridian. She truly loved
this place and tried to give back to the community she always considered
her home. Among her activities were volunteering at Cape Canaveral Hospital
as a ''Pink Lady'' and many years as a volunteer with the Brevard Art
Museum in Eau Gallie. She was a long-time supporter of The Haven, Hacienda
Girl's Ranch, and The South Brevard Sharing Center. She is survived by her
daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Sonny Witt of Melbourne; her son and
daughter-in-law, Victor and Ardis Powell of Provincetown, Mass.; her three
grandsons, Olen Rice III, Thane Rice and Tony Rice; eight
great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. She was predeceased by
her grandson, H Christopher Rice. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m.
Saturday at South Brevard Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held at 2
p.m., Sunday, in the funeral home chapel.
