Edwin James Smith passed away Wednes day, June 9, a2004 at his home. Ed was born on February 13, 1926, in Bis marck, North Dakota, to Amelia Appert Smith and Darwin Reed Smith. In 1930, his family moved to Ft. Myers, Florida, where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, graduated from Duke University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and settled in Brevard County in 1955. He worked at the Tech Lab for Pan Am for 17 years before joining Stottler, Stagg and Associates in 1972. His career with this firm of archi tects, engineers and planners took him all over the world. In addition to his responsibilities as power and lighting design engi neer, he excelled at project management, coordination and contract negotiation. His last months he endured dialysis treatment in an effort to spend as much time as possible with his family. He is our hero. Ed is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Smith; sister, Miriam Smith Egolf; daughters, Cherie Beck, Cindy Richter and Kerry Kimmel-Geiger; son, Scott Smith; and step-sons, Chris, Dan, and Jeff Hazel, spouses; and more than 25 grand and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his childrens mother, Rosa Lee McNulty Smith, and a brother, Austin Clement Smith. A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon, Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the Cocoa Beach Community Church, 126 So. Atlantic Avenue.
