Eugene Vernon Sheffield, Jr., 76, died Tues day, May 18, 2004, at Holmes Regional Med ical Center, after a brief illness. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on September 11, 1927, he moved to Kingsland, Ga., Eustis, Fla., and then to DeLand, where he received his degree in mathematics from Stetson University. Following graduation, he began living in Melbourne where he met his wife of 47 years, Diana Berg. Gene served in the Army dur ing World War II and as an MP during the Korean War. He found employment in the aero space industry as a computer programmer for RCA at the Missile Test Range, Patrick Air Force Base. In 1984, he received RCAs Star of the Year award as the most outstanding project employee. He retired in 1988. Not one to seek the spotlight, Gene was happiest quietly read ing outside in his lawn chair, working side by side with Diana on their computers, or making observations on one of his bird ing trips. He delighted in chil dren, wildflowers, literature, computers, and , of course, birds, about which he knew so much. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Diana Berg Sheffield; sons, Robert, Stanley and Randall; daughter, Susan; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Morton; a niece; and two nephews. A Celebration of Genes Life will be held at 3 p.m., on Friday, May 21st, at First United Meth odist Church, 110 New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, where he was an active member for many years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Audubon of Florida, 444 Brickell Avenue Suite 850, Miami, FL 33131 or to the American Cancer Society.
