MERRITT ISLAND -- George Richard ''Dick''Metcalf, 71, a retired aerospace worker, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at home. Mr. Metcalf was born in Waukegan, Illinois on April 23, 1932. He was a Naval Submariner, aboard the USS Odax from 1949 until 1953 when he married his wife and best friend, Maria Kakouris. Mr. Metcalf was involved in the aerospace industry from 1955 until his retirement in 1993 with Convair, General Dynamics, Rocketdyne, Rockwell International, LockheedMartin and United Space Alliance. Dick was famous for telling his children and grandchildren outrageous fables only he could tell. He also enjoyed bowling, playing golf, watching sports and old westerns on TV, and hanging out at the B&H with his KSC buddies solving aerospace problems over a ''Cold One'' after work. Dick was a charter member of Cocoa Beach B.P.O.E. #2387, co-founder, charter member and lifetime member of Merritt Island B.P.O.E. #2650, and a member of the Merritt Island Moose Lodge #2073, where he enjoyed playing shuffleboard on Saturday afternoons. Mr. Metcalf is survived by his wife of 50 years, Maria Metcalf of Merritt Island; daughter, Cindi (Todd) Hintz of Merritt Island; son, John (Maggie) Metcalf of Santee, Calif.; grandchildren, Todd and Stacey Hintz of Merritt Island, Monica and Michael Metcalf of Santee, Calif.; step-mother, Magdalene Metcalf of Lorida, Fla.; brothers, Robert (Joy) Metcalf Jr. of Tavares, Fla., and Jerry (Kay) Metcalf of Marshall, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Metcalf, Sr.; mother, Lucille Lille; stepfather, Grover ''Lou'' Lillie; and brother, Bruce Metcalf. ''It is not how you leave this earth that counts; it's what you accomplish while you are here.'' No calling hours are scheduled. There will be a Celebration Of his Life at 7175 Briar Oak Drive in Merritt Island on Saturday, October 4, 2003 from 2 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Florida Elk's Charities (Florida Elk's Youth Camp or Florida Elk's Children's Therapy Services) at P.O. Box 49, 24175 SE Highway 450, Umatilla,FL 32784. Wylie-Baxley Merritt Island Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
