SMITH MERRITT ISLAND Gordon E. Smitty Smith, 80, departed this life after a brave struggle with cancer at Casual Country Living, an assisted living facility in Cocoa, on Wednesday June 30, 2004. He was a resident of Merritt Island. Gordon was born in Livingston, New Jersey on November 15, 1923. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns. He moved with his family to Brevard County in the early 50s to work in the Space Program where he was an electrician with Pan American World Airways. He also ran his own business, Body Shop Supply, prior to retiring. Gordon is survived by his loving and devoted daughter, Sandra Gail of Alexandria, Virginia; as well as three step- sons, Rick Blair of Midlothian, Virginia, Bob Blair of Portland, Michigan and Dan Blair of Apache Junction, Arizona. He is also survived by his brother, Leonard of Budd Lake, New Jersey, as well as his adopted family, the Sowards of Merritt Island. His marriages to Dorothy Bridges and Novel Werner ended in divorce. His wife, Patricia, died in 1994. Smitty was a compassionate, humorous, and generous man who never knew a stranger. He frequently shared his substantial mechanical knowl edge, as well as his friendship, with his neighbors or anyone else who needed help and always enjoyed making others laugh. Smitty will be greatly missed by all who knew and cared for him. His family wishes to acknowl edge the wonderful care and support provided by his Hospice team, including Lynn, Debbie, Alston and Gladys, as well as the staff at his assisted living facility, including Nancy, Tracy, Chris and Teresa. Anyone wishing to celebrate his life with a remembrance is urged to consider a donation in his name to the Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice, 8060 Spy glass Hill Road, Viera, FL 32940.
