HERBERT KIESLING COCOA -- Herbert Charles Kiesling, 71, a retired engineer with NASA for 28 years, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, at home.

Mr. Kiesling was born in Flushing, N.Y. He came to Brevard County in 1964 from Garden City, N.Y.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Kiesling was a graduate of the University of Alabama with an Master of Business Administration, and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering.

He retired from NASA after working as a telemetry chief on Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab. He was a payload specialist for the shuttle, and a chief payload engineer at Vandenberg A.F.B. in California.

Mr. Kiesling received a commendation for documentation on the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire, and numberous NASA awards for his 28 years of service.

Survivors include his former wife, Susan Kiesling of Cocoa; sons, James Kiesling of Pensacola, Douglas Kiesling of Delton and Robert Kiesling of West Palm Beach; daughter, Kristin Kiesling Johnsen of Germantown, Md.; sister, Gladys MacDougle of Lawrence, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Wylie-Baxley Rockledge Funeral Home. Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Cocoa. Burial will be in Flushing, N.Y.
