JOHN ATKINS MELBOURNE BEACH - John Robert Atkins, 74, a retired electrical engineer, died Sunday, Aug. 6, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Mr. Atkins was born in Detroit. He came to Brevard County in 1957 from Mishawauka, Ind.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Atkins was employed in the Aerospace Industry for more than 30 years. He worked in the space program from the mid-1950s through the Apollo program.

He was Chief Safety Director for NASA and Kennedy Space Center.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Atkins of Melbourne Beach; son, John Atkins of Cocoa; daughter, Becky Atkins of Lakeland; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Beach Funeral Home in Indian Harbour Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Melbourne Beach.
