TALBERT GATES
COCOA BEACH -- Talbert Mark Gates, 77, died at his Cocoa Beach, Florida home on Friday, September 22, 2000. Known by most as ''Tim'', he was born in Columbus, Ohio, on January 13, 1923. He served as a B-29 Bomber pilot and flight instructor in the Army Air Force during World War II. Later becoming an Air Force Project Officer for the Lark, Navaho, Atlas and Minuteman missile programs. He retired from the Air Force in 1966 as a Lt. Colonel after 23 years of service. He then made his final move to Brevard County to join North American Rockwell Co., as an engineer for the Apollo-Saturn program, for three years that contributed to mankind's first trips to the Moon. He has operated his own real estate brokerage in Cocoa Beach since 1970. Col. Gates was a Life Member of the Space Pioneers, a member of the Board of Realtors, and an active member of the Rockledge Country Club. He was an avid golfer. He attended Miami University of Ohio and Purdue University, and received an Electrical Engineering degree from the USAF Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson, AFB, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie. Survivors include his companion of many years, Jane Laird Hill of Merritt Island; sons, Gary and Steven Gates of Cocoa Beach; sister, Margaret Kilikna of Winter Springs; and brother, Norman Gates of Titusville. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home, 101 N. Brevard Ave., Cocoa Beach. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Patrick AFB Seaside Chapel. Interment after cremation will be at Florida Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4356-B Fortune Place, West Melbourne, FL 32904.
