William G. (Bill) Hardin, Sr., died in Winston Salem, N.C., on Sunday, August 1, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House. Bill was born in Ohatchee, Alabama on January 23, 1926 to the late Martin A. and Ewell M. Hardin. Bill was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a Space advocate. He worked for NASA as a Quality Inspector on the Mercury, Gemi ni, Apollo and the Space Shuttle Programs. He retired from NASA, went to work for the Rockwell and Lockheed Corpor ations, finally retiring from the Space Program in 1990. He was the proud recipient of the Astronaut Silver Snoopy Award, and was also a veteran of World War II, serving the Army Air Force in the Pacific. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Martin A. Hardin, II; and a brother, Howard B. Hardin. Bill is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Joanne B. Hardin of Mims; sons, William G. (Donna) Hardin, Jr. of Annis ton, Ala., J. Dennis (Cecile) Hardin of Port St. John, and William T. (Joy) Hardin of Port St. John; daughters, Linda Glisson of Thurmond, N.C., Tamara Hardin of Mims and Meri H. (Jack) Morey of Mims. He is also survived by his grandchildren, William G. (Laura) Hardin III-Trey of the Netherlands, Heather (Sterling) Rice of Pollack, La., Holly Hardin, Samantha Hosburgh and Brian (Joanna) Hardin of Jacksonville, Tonya Hosburgh and Michelle Hosburgh of Pensacola, Jaclyn and MeriAnne Morey of Gaines ville, Thomas Hardin, Melinda Hardin, Steven Hardin, Angelia Hardin, Tammy Jo Hardin, Martin A. Hardin III, and Aaron Miles of Mims, and Ahnathea Hughes of Anniston, Ala.; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in- love, Goldie Andersen, Yvonne Briley, Kay Briley; brother-in- law, Dr. William P. (Janet) Briley; three nieces; one neph ew; and aunts, Mary Postelle (Dr. Everett) Drews of New Or leans and Laverne Hardin of Deland. He had been a resident of Mims for over 45 years. He was a volunteer for the Mims Fire Department and the first Scout master for Mims. He was an inspiration to all of his family and will be missed forever. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Astronaut Hall of Fame or to your local hospice. Interment and memorial serv ices will be held at a later date at St. Gabriels Episcopal Church.
