Major William (Bill) Scott Wood, USAF retired, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004. Major Wood was born in Lawrence, Long Island, New York on May 26, 1924. He resided in the Space Coast area for 36 years.
He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and retired from the United States Air Force in 1970, serving as a pilot, operations and communications officer. He served with distinction for his 27 year career to include World War II with the 510th Fighter Squadron of the 405th Fighter Group, Korea and Vietnam. His last assignment in 1968 was at Patrick Air Force Base in support of the Apollo Program. He was a member of the Order of Daedalians, the VFW, DAV, and Jenkins Jerry Junkers. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elinor (Wahls trom) Wood; six children, Barbara Thornbury, Scott, Kenneth, Nancy Melrae, Wendy and John; eleven grand children; two great- grandchildren and one soon to arrive; three sisters, Helen, Peggy and Joan; and a niece, Peggy Ann Shea. A viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, June 11, 2004, at Beach Funeral Home East Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m, Satur day, June 12, 2004, at the Capehart Chapel followed by a celebration of life at 11 a.m, at the Patrick Officers Club. Major Wood will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or any other military organization.
