GEORGE SASSEEN, Jr.MERRITT ISLAND George Thiery Sasseen, Jr., 75, an aerospace engineering executive, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Fla. Mr. Sasseen was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on July 21, 1928, to George Thiery and Rosemary (Head) Sasseen. He was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953. He received a BME from Yale University in 1949. Some of his duties/job histories are: Registered Profl. Engineer, Texas, Branch Chief-elect for Space craft Operations at Kennedy Space Center, NASA, Fla., in 1961, Chief Engineering Division, 1964-66, Director of Engineering shuttle Operations at KSC NASA, 1975-1984, Assistant Manager Space Station, 1984-1986, Engineering Director Shuttle Operations Return to Flight 1986-1993, with Space Station Skunk Works at Johnson Space Center, NASA, Houston, Summer 1984. Mr. Sasseen retired from NASA in January 1994. Some of his awards include being named Engineer of the Year Space Congress, 1971; he was the recipient of the NASA Awards for exceptional service, outstanding leadership, twice; distinguished service, and was awarded the Presidential Meritorious Excellence award. He was a member, and Commodore in 1975, of the Power Squadron, a member of the Moose Lodge and the Tau Beta Pi. He is survived by his current wife, Judith Harrington; son, John Sasseen; step-children Brad Lee Bandlow and Jason Gioia; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Patricia, Rosemary and Sheila. Mr. Sasseen was preceded in death by his children, Sharon Hudek and George Sasseen, III. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 28th, at Florida Memorial Funeral Home. An open house will follow immediately after the service, at the family home on Merritt Island. Florida Memorial Funeral Home in Rockledge is in charge of arrangements. |
